Plain legal language for a new democracy

Viljoen, F; Nienaber, A (eds)

Beskikbaarheid: In stock

Quick Overview

South Africa’s new democratic order guarantees more than periodic elections. It promises continuous participation in the institutions of democracy by granting to individuals the right to information, of access to court and to a fair trial. One of the obstacles to free and full participation of all South Africans in these democratic institutions is difficult, alienating and inaccessible legal language.

The contributions in Plain legal language for a new democracy investigate the need for and benefits of using plain legal language in South Africa.

This publication is the first collection of its kind in South Africa. It brings together papers presented at a conference on plain language, organised by the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, in July 1999.
