Voices from the land

Schadeberg, J

Beskikbaarheid: In stock

Quick Overview

Just as the Farmers’ Security Administration in the States during the thirties produced a major photographic essay on the plight of farmers to raise public awareness, Voices from the land reveals, through images by Jurgen Schadeberg, the harsh reality of the lives of many rural farm workers. Our urban community, mostly familiar with postcard versions of farm life, can now take a glimpse into the nether and neglected world of rural life, into the bleak existences of many farm workers who are deprived of dignity, self respect and hope in a continuous cycle of poverty and hardship. Constant threats of eviction, harassment and homelessness compound an already volatile situation. Images are powerful tools in bringing about positive change and when complemented by evocative stories written by a team of committed writers the effect is even more intense. We lift the veil on rural farm life and invite you to experience, through pictures and words, a journey into a world dominated by fear, hunger, pain and despair.

Jurgen Schadeberg was born in Berlin in 1931 and, while still in his teens, worked as an apprentice photographer for a German press agency in Hamburg. In 1950 he immigrated to South Africa and became Chief Photographer, Picture Editor and Art Director on Drum magazine. Since then he has been working in and about South Africa, capturing pivotal images on film. Today, he remains a principal figure in South African and world photography. His major body of work, which spans 55 years and incorporates a collection of some 100 000 negatives, captures a wealth of timeless and iconic images.
